Hi

I have a simple question: my goal is not buying domains anymore and to have only one main domain, and to create many subdomains/directories, where in each directory i will install wordpress.

By that i want to achieve the ability of having many websites which are on the same root domain like:

Root domain : www.root.com
And under i will have:
www.root.com/sport
www.root.com/nature

each directory is a web site on specific niche

Can this be done? how?

I will appreciate your help
Thanks again

Laura,

I'm glad you manage to resolve the problems! I definitely see your point about self-control, but I've been having a lot of great results with <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/" rel="nofollow">Donncha's plugin</a>, but obviously you have to use what works best for your needs.

Also don't forget that WPMU codebase will be merging into WP, so I'm not sure what that will do for these directions and sites using these directions.

Thanks!

Hallelujah, I figured out the foreach() error. I changed the site_id back to match the blog_id so it was once again its own blog owner.

Then I checked the "options" page on the parent blog against the "options" page of the sibling blogs and noticed that the media settings were different. Basically, the sibling blogs aren't inheriting the settings of the parent, so make sure you match them up manually.

For me, that meant allowing all three "media upload buttons," changing the maximum file upload size to 1500 and matching up the "file upload types" to mirror each other.

The foreach() error specifically turned out to be a problem with the media upload buttons not matching the parent blog. I assume the database is set up slightly differently with those settings checked.

Once again, thanks for your instruction. I much prefer having manual control over the setup than relying on a plugin that has some limitations.

Hey Richard, this is so helpful, thank you!

One thing about the foreach() error that's been mentioned a couple of times. I, too, am experiencing it when trying to upload images to any of the newly created blogs. ""Invalid argument supplied for foreach()" in functions.php.

It was throwing the error on all of the blogs using the default Kubrick theme and I hadn't changed any of the theme code nor had I installed any plugin other than phpmyadmin.

I went back into the wp_blogs table and changed the site_ids back to 1 and the error went away, but now obviously those newly created blogs are no longer their own owner and can't create sub-domain blogs within themselves.

Don't know if this will trigger any thoughts for anybody on how to fix it, but I thought I'd mention my experience.

I've been meaning to fix this. I have to look for the images and will re-upload them once I find them.

I'm at a loss...

I have completed the above steps and have successfully gotten the subdomains to work, but I continually get timeout errors on the "main" domain (the /var/www/html domain). I *am* able to connect to domain.com, domain.com/wp-admin and to domain.com/phpMyAdmin, however as soon as I do something that requires searching, paging to a next page, etc., it times out.

The timeouts do not happen on any of the mapped virtual domains (6 or 7 are mapped). The virtual domains are using the same database as the "main" domain, a database named "wordpressmu".

httpd settings:
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"

Virtual domain settings:
NameVirtualHost *:80

    DocumentRoot /var/www/html
    ServerName	virtualhost.com
    ServerAlias	www.virtualhost.com *.webmusings.com
    ErrorLog logs/virtualhost.com-error_log
    CustomLog logs/virtualhost.com-access_log common

Any ideas? Thank you in advance!
