After using the Nikkor 28-105mm F/3.5-5.6 as my primary lens for the longest time, I finally accepted the severe limitation of a 3.5-5.6 aperture lens. This was glaringly apparent when I went to Muir Woods with Andrea.
Almost every picture I shot (hand held), deeper in the woods, came out blurry as if I was trying to do my own rendition of Blair Witch Project with a camera. Horrible. I was getting speeds of 1/3, 1/5, 1/10 and even increasing the ISO did not help much.
After countless hours of searching online about the Nikkor 50mm F/1.8, I finally decided to take the plunge. It was down to two lens actually, the Nikkors 50mm F/1.4 and F/1.8, respectively. I ultimately chose the F/1.8 for two reasons: (1) Difference in shooting quality, sharpness, etc. was minimal and (2) the cost of the F/1.4 didn’t justify its slightly better performance than the F/1.8.
I purchased the Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 from Beachcamera.com and would highly recommend them to anyone for three reasons: (1) Lowest price for a brand new in the box 50mm, $109.95; (2) Authorized Nikon dealer so I get the 5 year warranty; and (3) Prompt shipping, selecting FedEx 5-7 days got me the lens in 3 days.

Cool! Do you know if it would work on my D50?
Perfectly. I believe your D50 has the auto focus screw at 7 o’clock (when you’re looking directly at the camera without the lens mounted) position. That’ll drive the auto focus on the 50mm. I do believe your 18-200mm is also screw driven too no?
